Let's face it: One of the biggest things that sets apart a home by a professional designer from a DIY one is the level of customization, down to the last details. No one knows this better than Tom Parker and Andy Goodwin, the founders of Fettle, House Beautiful's September Next Wave. Since starting their firm in 2015, the duo has created some of the buzziest restaurants, bars, and hotels in London, Los Angeles, and more.
In the hospitality world, bespoke furniture is extra important, since everything must serve such a distinct function, but Parker and Goodwin would argue that a similar level of attention should be payed to residential spaces—a theory they prove in their work.
Of course, not all of us are lucky enough to have the Toms and Andys of the world outfitting our spaces, so we posed a question to them: If you could only have one custom item in your home, what should it be?
The answer, unsurprisingly, was based in function. "You want to go back to the process of your day," Andy explains. "That chair you spend the most time in? That's the one to customize."
So there you have it: when it comes to a much-used item, it's well worth the extra effort to make it exactly the way you want it. And if Tom and Andy had their way, you'd do that to every last piece in your house. "If it were up to me, everything would either be found and reupholstered or custom," Tom says. "There's a real beauty in a piece that is totally unique." Hear, hear.
